If you have been able to avert your eyes from the pose of the hirsute Mister Michael Henderson on the cover - more of that shortly! - the information can now be imparted that ‘Slingshot’ was the singer/songwriter/bass player’s sixth album for Buddah Records, originally released in 1981. It made its debut on the ‘Billboard’ r&b album charts on September 19 of that year and climbed to a peak of #14 over a 17-week run. It had been preceded by a sterling #9 r&b hit duet with Phyllis Hyman, the track 3 ‘Can’t We Fall In Love Again’ - where it can be evidenced how well the two voices blend - and would boast further successes by way of the funky dancer, ‘(We Are Here To) Geek You Up’ and a dramatic remake of Jerry Butler’s hit, ‘Make It Easy On Yourself’, each demonstrating the versatility of the man. ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ is another item from Butler’s catalogue, while the man’s own ‘Take Care’ continues to keep things in ballad mode. The ‘Slingshot’ title track and ‘In It For The Goodies’ ensure the funk-loving fraternity are further catered for and things close with another duet - this time with Venna Keith - in the shape of ‘Come To Me’.
