Item Description
The songs of Pumpin' are state of the art and time, they present the bright 80's keyboard/guitar driven sheen that newer recording techniques were able to better capture. Fonzi's vocals are layered, echoed and stacked in a post R&B traditional vocal styling not beholden to Motown or Stax. This is very much a Modern/Future Soul sound that anticipated the present pop/hip-hop chart dominance in its use of "Big Bam Boom" propulsive drum sounds. As much as this is an 80's album, the elements are relevant even now and will probably remain so. Check that 21st century attitude on Jocelyn Brown's vocal on "In The Doghouse". When asked, Fonzi is succinct in his appraisal of songs from Pumpin'- "Baby, I’m A Rich Man, Now- The ballad speaks to the way that the right relationship can change your life. Rock My Heart said I’m open now, I’m ready for the excitement- yet the real deal, Every Nite was about suspicion, Playmate –that let me spark your fantasy scenario, all of the songs say things I really felt at the time. This album was more fun and 80’s upbeat than The Leader which I also loved." RCA's dance department loved the album too, providing several tasty remixes and dubs- several of which are bonus tracks on this CD. During this time, the production team of Robert Wright & Fonzi Thornton also worked on The Jones Girls- On Target lp for RCA, and production for Tramaine Hawkins on A&M Records.
