Carl Anderson 1945-2004
When I was first asked to write the liner notes for Carl Anderson's 1985 project "Protocol", I was both honored and surprised. In addition to my musical background as a retail buyer and earlier experiences as both club and college radio D.J., I'm now manager for several current independent recording artists- but I've never written liner notes.
My first exposure to singer/actor Carl Anderson was -like many of us- through his riveting performance as Judas Icariot in the film version of Jesus Christ Superstar. While the acting ability was obvious, I became a fan of his vocals.
Carl Anderson always struck me as this singer with great range (and clarity of diction) who has that rare ability to sing flawlessly from a technical standpoint- but still communicate character and emotion.
Rather than going cut by cut, I would like to talk about the project as a whole. Patrick Henderson (of Doobie Brothers and Leon Russell fame) produced "Protocol" which (IMHO) contains the finest vocal performance of Carl Anderson's career -"Can't Stop This Feeling", produced by Al McKay (EWF Guitarist and producer of The Temptations and Finis Henderson), along with the Gary Taylor written and produced "Let's Talk".
(Producers Note- Listen for the vocals of an uncredited Gwen Guthrie on the bonus remix of "Let's Talk")
These songs epitomized what made Protocol special.....HOT, FUNKY R&B tracks, structured with enough room to allow Carl to show his range, elasticity and superb vocal technique. An interesting footnote is the songwriting presence of one pre-superstar Michael Bolton- then writing some of the greatest Pop influenced R&B songs ever.
I have always felt that "Protocol" was by far the best of Carl's four Columbia albums.
Protocol is essential Carl Anderson at his best. It gives you a glimpse of the future smooth jazz success that Carl would have in the early 90's on the GRP label both as a solo artist and with Nancy Wilson and The Rippingtons.
"Protocol" was also the album prior to his greatest commercial success- The Gloria Loring duet "Friends and Lovers". Carl Anderson despite being commercially overshadowed by Freddie Jackson, El Debarge, Luther Vandross and their equally talented ilk in the 1980's, was one of the great male voices of the decades.
If you've never heard Carl Anderson and his glorious voice before then "Protocol" is a great way to be introduced.
